Shekhawati, located
125 kms to the north west of Jaipur, is spread over three
destricts of Rajasthan, namely Churu, Sikar and Jhunjhunu. The flourishing
story of Shekhawati started in the later 18th century with the
development of the overland caravan trade route links. The
principle commercial line followed were: the Delhi via Bhiwani in
Hissar(the greatest easter mart of Rajputana) to via Rani (Taranagar),
the other via Churu, Ratangarh and Sujangarh to Phalodi, Nagaur,
Jodhpur and Pali in Marwar.
The exquisite painted monuments of Shekhawati, constructed
during the last three centuries demonstrate outstanding examples
of art and architecture . Today they depict one of the most
important phases of art, architectural and cultural history of
Rajasthan.
Build with lot of passion, money and skilled workmanship the
painted havelis have suffered destruction owing to the entire
region being abandoned within the last few decades. As precious
cultural heritage, they need to be protected carefully, both
from vagaries of nature and vandalism of man.
For the past
several years, the Morarka Foundation has sponsored the annual
'Shekhawati Festival'
as an opportunity to highlight the region's fantastic array of
culture and bring in much needed money and opportunity for the
people who live here. This year's Shekhawati Festival gives
special attention to the organic farm industry that has
developed here. We welcome our visitors
not only to come and SEE Shekhawati, but to TASTE a bit of the
region's rich flavors while you are here. |
